Federal policies now allow digital news outlets to cover up to 50 percent of their costs through government subsidies. This means not only the CBC but also private outlets like the Globe and Mail and Postmedia are being majority-funded by the government.

​More government funding of news leads to less trust in media and weakens journalism's ability to hold the government accountable. At Rupland, we refuse these subsidies to preserve our independence.
